Coach Cal Elder

Coach Cal Elder began swimming in 1973 and was a top ranked swimmer in his day. While attending college at Indiana University, he continued his swimming career under the legendary Doc Counsilman.

God has called Coach Cal to spend his life teaching people of all ages how to swim. 
It is his life's mission and passion.  A calling and mission he embraces fervently.



Coach Cal has been coaching swimmers of all ages and abilities for over 27 years. He truly specializes in teaching people the correct way to swim.

Although Coach Cal is well-known for being the best in Birmingham in teaching younger kids the art of competitive swimming, he also has expertise in successfully coaching the older, high school aged kids. While the Aquatics Director at a YMCA in Ohio, Coach Cal's high school team achieved unmatched success. In addition, some went on to achieve All American status.

Coach Cal has coached numerous Top 16 Individual and Relay Age Group qualifiers as well as many Southeastern Conference champions.  Coach Cal is married to Liz and has 4 beautiful daughters - Maggie (18), Patsy (9), Mary Morgan (8) and Ren (5).

Coach Lisa Williams:

Coach Lisa has been coaching with M*C*A*L for several years.  She got involved in coaching swimming in 2000, when her children started swimming, at first as a volunteer.  Then in 2003, Lisa was hired as an assistant coach at the Anniston YMCA.  In 2007, Lisa moved to the Trussville YMCA as their head coach and moved to M*C*A*L in 2009.  Lisa coaches both summer league and year-round and enjoys teaching swim lessons - private and group.  Lisa has coached YMCA National long course swimmers as well as age group sectional qualifiers and Southeastern champions.  Lisa is married to Neal and they have two children - Hannah (19) who currently swims on with M*C*A*L and Patrick (22).

Coach Dawn Motter Todd:

Coach Dawn began swimming in 1981 and got her start coaching summer league swimming in 1992. Coach Dawn currently coaches at the Brook Highland Racquet Club during the summer. She has had experience with youth swimmers in Birmingham, Atlanta and Baldwin County, AL. She particularly enjoys working with young swimmers who are just beginning their team experience.

Helping young people to find success and be proud of their accomplishments - however small - is a top priority for Coach Dawn.  Dawn is married to David.  They have 4 beautiful children - Brennan (13), Rilyn (9), Anya (3) and Ronan (7 months).

Coach Jennifer Campbell:

Coach Jennifer began swimming summer league when she was a child.  But it wasn't until she had her own children that she really got involved with swimming.  Jennifer has been coaching swimming and teaching swim lessons for the past 4 years.  In addition to swimming, she's very interested in other sports and even helps M*C*A*L as one of its Dry Land coaches. 
Jennifer is married to David and they have 4 children - Maddie (13), Lamar (10), Ellie (7) and Koerper (5).

Coach Liz Elder:

Coach Liz (Coach Cal's wife) began swimming competitively at age 4. A Southeastern top ranked swimmer, she continued swimming through high school. She and Coach Cal swam on the same team growing up and even life guarded together. They have known each other since junior high school. Between driving her  children here and there, Coach Liz works behind the scenes updating the website and tending to all the adminstrative duties required to run a swim team.
